Becker Z98t Review

This is a basic GPS device that does the job quite well. It has no Bluetooth and no MP3 player that other SatNav devices have. But what appeals most from its hardware features is its large 4.3 inch wide TFT touchscreen display and 2 GB of internal memory.

You get microSD memory expansion support besides. However, battery life is only good for 2 hours on a single charge. That makes the Becker Z98t useful in the car where it gets tethered to the car charging. Most consumers complain about its small font sizes which makes it difficult to read from the driver seat when mounted on the windscreen but its text to speech voice direction in 28 languages should mitigate that.

Okay, enough with the bad side of the Becker Z98T. Well, it does all the navigation tasks covering all the basics we’ve come to expect from such devices.

First off, the device gets automatic turn on and off with the car’s ignition when linked to the car’s charger. There’s automatic brightness control to adjust to day and night conditions. This is a cool feature so that it doesn’t come out aggressively bright which can distract you when driving at night.

But you need to get the Traffic Assist Content Manger application configured and started on your PC to get updates online. The Becker Z505’s UK, ROI and European maps are updated from Navteq at the mybecker online site a £19.99 value but are now free of charge starting the third quarter of the year onwards for its clients.

You get a choice of 2D or 3D top view of the car when in a turn by turn directed navigation. Lane Information shows the driver which lane to get into before making a turn. There’s Point of Interest (POI) application that can be updated from the mybecker site once you hook the device with the PC for online updating. Getting to your destination is determined with alternative routes displayed to help you make your choice. It also displays upcoming road signs as well as basic country information as you cross country borders. The device does not come bundled with speed camera locations but you can have this downloaded free from the mybecker website.

Conclusion

If you need the basic SatNav device with a user friendly control and navigation support, this is it. There are no fancy stuffs like entertainment features you find elsewhere. There’s not even a home charger so you need to let it stay in the car as a permanent feature. Don’t bother using this when walking as it only lasts 2 hours from a single charge, unless you have a spare battery with you. The sales pack contains the typical accessories that include a 2 part car mounting bracket, USB cables and the software you need.
