Binatone was founded in the 1950s to import consumer electronics into the UK. Founded by brothers Gulu and Partap Lalvani, the company was named after their younger sister Bina, and was the first business to import transistor radios in the UK from Japan. In the 1970s and 1980s Binatone moved into the TV game and walkman market, and at one point their version of the walkman outsold Sony’s. Since the 1990s Binatone has seen a steady growth in the phone market and was the first company to introduce digital cordless phones into the UK. In 2007 started to produce GPS satellite navigation systems. Binatone is now the third largest producer of GPS systems in the UK with a 10% market share as well as producing 30% of DECT phones in the UK.
