A High Value GPS SatNav – the Navman F45 Review
If you want a fully featured SatNav handset to get you to where you want as fast and safe as possible with the least hassle, look no further. The Navman F45 delivers faster GPS connectivity as well as a crisp brilliant touchscreen that makes reading maps a delight to do.
Navman has taken out some frills that the more expensive GPS devices now have such as a geo tagging camera, access to traffic management channels, WiFi, Bluetooth, multimedia players and microSD support to deliver the few that really matter to the motorists, except perhaps the TMC.
Hence, you get a compact GPS with a very wallet friendly price. If you need it, the traffic management channel access can be had on a Traffic Cradle module sold separately and should complete the F45’s highly capable GPS features.
Basic Navigational Features
Weighing just 155g on a compact stylishly designed 80 (H) x 137 (W) x 18.5 (D) body, the Navman F45 sports an expansive 4.3 inch touchscreen display with a 480 x 272 pixel resolution. Its covers the basic GPS function that recommends multiple routes to your input destination that are analyzed and presented for your choice.
It features an intelligent day/night display that automatically adjusts screen brightness to make it less distractive to the driver when mounted on the dashboard or windscreen. It sports the usual voice spoken turn by turn instructions and seamless maps and pre loaded database to alert and inform the driver as required for fast and safe driving.
The F45 uses the SiRFstarIII with InstantFixII GPS receiver for 5 times quicker and more reliable GPS connection. It comes pre loaded with regional and street level European map options for 23 Western European nations which Navman updates together with Tele Atlas. With a subscription, you get regular updates to the maps as well as over 2 million points of interest or POI that further aids the motorist in getting to locations without addresses.
There’s also a pre installed safety camera data to warn you of upcoming camera locations along the road or highway. The service is provided on a 12 month free trial period from date of purchase, so you still need a paid subscription that allows you to download the latest safety camera updates. Once on the site, you get Navman’s iUpData service that enables motorists to correct inaccurate safety camera location to make the database as up to date as possible.
The F45 also features 2D and 3D moving map displays that gets smoother transitions thanks to its powerful Samsung 2450/400 MHz CPU.
What’s in the Package
The F45 comes with the usual in vehicle charger, USB data cables, dashboard or windscreen mounting bracket and documentation in a CD. The device runs on a rechargeable Lithium ion battery that powers it up for 3 hours on a single charge. The F45 is best left as an in car GPS as its short lifespan lessens its appeal for extended sight seeing trips on your feet or biking, unless you have a spare battery with you.
