Navman S500t Review

The stylishly slim and elegant Navman S500T occupies the high end position in Navman’s S series of SatNav GPS devices that hit the market in recent months. Its Slide Touch feature partners well on its sumptuous 4.7” wide VGA touchscreen that allows quick access to a slew of upscale features we’ve come to expect from navigational gadgets in this class. Weighing just 160g from a slim 85 x 132 x 14mm body, the S500T sports an internal 128MBof internal memory that you can expand with its microSD slot.

At A Glance

As with any GPS device, you get preloaded maps of the UK, Ireland and Western European nations down to the street level. You get 3D junction views that show exit and junction signage before you reach them so you’d know what to expect as you approach these points.
It has a Lane Guidance system that shows you which lane to take ahead of an incoming junction or freeway exit. Turn by turn navigational instructions are verbal so your eyes remain safely on the road without having to glance on the GPS display information.

You have points of interest on its database which you can update with added geo tagged photos of landmarks and other notable places from the NavPix and Flickr sites free of charge. You can just tap on any of these geo tagged photos and the Navman S500T navigates you to the real places on those photos.

One of the advantages of getting a high end SatNav device is you get some freebies with the purchase. There’s a lifetime free access to the Traffic Management Channel which gives your up to the minute real time updates on traffic situation building up along the route you are taking. This helps you change route when necessary so you can reach your destination quicker.

Pre loaded with the device is a database on safety camera locations along roads and highways to keep you on the right safety speed limits as you approach these cameras. This function will give you time to slow down and prevent any traffic fines. Here, the warning you get is both visual and verbal.

The Navman S500T comes pre loaded with AA Travel Books from Wcities. This is an excellent feature if you get to be a local tourist on a weekend or in any European city tour. It is a useful database with extensive listings on tourist attractions, information on place of interest, landmarks, hotels, and great places for dining and entertainment, among others. This goes well with its Walking Mode that’s lets the GPS navigate you on foot or on a public conveyance.

Last but not the least, it comes with Bluetooth. Just pair it with your mobile phone so you can have hands free calling through the S500T for a safer drive.

The Navman S500T is packaged with USB cables, in vehicle charger for its lithium ion battery, user manuals on CD, mounting bracket for the windshield and the MioMore desktop software on DVD to get you tethered to your PC for regular online updates and downloading.
