One of the original endeavours GPS was applied to back in the 1980s when it was being developed was outdoor pursuits. These systems were designed to operate much like a compass and to assist people out in the wilderness to navigate their way around. These handheld devices can be easily carried about in a way that in-car systems can’t. Because these systems may be beneficial to a hiker or mountain climber it may be important that they have a long battery life and are durable enough to tolerate harsh weather environments like blizzards and rivers.
